In school Edward Glenn Roberts, Jr. loved both baseball and car racing. After a limited time playing baseball where he got his nickname “Fireball,” his victories on dirt tracks turned him to racing full time. During his career Fireball Roberts raced a number of different cars none more famous than the 1957 Ford with a “Thunderbird Special” supercharged 312 c.i. V-8. He won eight races and was voted “Most Popular Driver”. Unfortunately Glenn “Fireball” Roberts’ career was cut short in 1964 after a crash that erupted into flames. The crash did, however, bring about new and important safety regulations. During his time Fireball Roberts won 33 races in only 206 starts. This included winning the prestigious Daytona 500 in 1962. He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
